What is the Freelance Education Alliance?

The Freelance Education Alliance (FEA) is a community-led action group bringing together educators, researchers, policymakers, freelancers and industry partners committed to improving how students and graduates are prepared for freelance careers.

Building on the foundations of the Freelance Education Framework, the Alliance identifies the sector’s most pressing challenges and mobilises its members to co-design practical solutions that strengthen freelance education.

Rather than simply discussing ideas, the FEA turns collective expertise into tangible outcomes — from resources and research to partnerships, campaigns and policy recommendations—that create lasting impact across FE, HE and beyond.

Our Mission

We believe every learner should have the opportunity to create their own future, whether through employment, freelancing, entrepreneurship or a portfolio career. Our mission is to help build the infrastructure for an education system that reflects this reality by ensuring freelance careers are recognised, valued and supported at every stage of the learner journey.

By driving collaboration, championing innovation and accelerating the adoption of effective practice, the Freelance Education Alliance is helping shape a future where freelance education is no longer the exception, but an integral part of preparing students for the changing world of work.

How the Alliance Works

From Ideas to Action

The Freelance Education Alliance operates through a series of Freelance Action Groups — community-led working cycles focused on tackling the sector’s most important challenges.

Each Action Group follows a simple process:

Vote – Members choose the next priority challenge.
Discover – A WhatsApp discussion explores the issue, barriers and opportunities.
Mobilise – Members form Action Groups and agree actions.
Deliver – Over the next 6–8 weeks, Action Groups deliver practical outputs.

How to Join the Alliance

FEA membership to the Alliance is by invitation or application and carries no membership fee. Admission is carefully curated to ensure it remains a trusted community committed to advancing freelance education.

There are two ways to become a member:

❶ Member Endorsement – An existing Alliance member may recommend you for membership by posting on the WhatsApp Group or contacting one of the Alliance Ambassadors (see below).

❷ Request an Invitation – Complete a short membership application form. Each application is reviewed by the team before invitations are issued and new members are admitted.
